WNBA Power Ranking #1 – Christian Orban

1. Seattle Storm (7–1)

Star power, depth, a top-notch defense and an efficient offense – no wonder the Storm are the prime contenders for a championship this season. The fact that Sue Bird missed a few games and that Natasha Howard is still struggling to find her form, didn’t slow them down even a bit. Breanna Stewart’s MVP-caliber performance is impressive, especially considering that she’s returning from an achilles tendon. Rookie Ezi Magbegor is already contributing on a remarkable level as well.

2. Los Angeles Sparks (5–3)

The Sparks are hungry for a championship, they have a deep roster and they’re getting more and more consistent. They’re excelling on offense, getting out in the open floor, moving the ball and knocking down shots from long range better than anyone else. They’re controlling the defensive glass and they’re forcing the most turnovers in the WNBA. Candace Parker impresses as well as their wing rotation of Riquna Williams, Sydney Wiese, Brittney Sykes and Seimone Augustus.

3. Las Vegas Aces (6–2)

Just like they were last season, the physical Aces are the best rebounding team in the WNBA. No other team scores more points in the paint or from the free throw line. The main responsibility is taken by the frontcourt trio of veteran star Angel McCoughtry, MVP candidate A’ja Wilson and Sixth Woman Dearica Hamby. In the backcourt, Jackie Young is improving in her second season. Their three-point shooting or lack of remains the Aces’ limiting factor.

4. Minnesota Lynx (6–2)

Despite some injury woes, the defensive-minded Lynx have been performing well. No team allows less points in the paint; no other team attacks the offensive glass better than Minnesota does. The Lynx rely on their powerful frontcourt: Sylvia Fowles (MVP level!), Napheesa Collier and Damiris Dantas. It is a joy to watch rookie point guard Crystal Dangerfield as well. On top of that, All-Star Odyssey Sims will soon join the action in the #Wubble.

5. Chicago Sky (5–3)

It’s rather unsurprising that the Sky are still a great offensive team: No one shoots better from the field, knocks down more three-pointers or dishes out more assists. The high turnover rate (11th) and the sub-par defense remain issues as well as the health of starting center Stefanie Dolson and go-to scorer Diamond DeShields. On the other hand, Azurá Stevens, Gabby Williams and Kahleah Copper have all made significant progress.

6. Phoenix Mercury (5–3)

The new-look Phoenix Mercury are looking good so far. First of all, the offense is already clicking: No team is more efficient. On an individual level, point guard Skylar Diggins-Smith and backup Bria Hartley have been integrated into the team flawlessly. On top of that, the three sophomores (especially Brianna Turner) are contributing in bigger roles. Veteran Diana Taurasi shows that there’s still a lot left in her tank.

7. Washington Mystics (3–5)

The Mystics started the season with a surprising 3–0, but have only lost since then. The main reason, especially in a condensed season: The roster lacks depth and has the least productive bench in the WNBA. They won’t be able to compensate the loss of topscorer Aerial Powers, not even for a few games. But you shouldn’t write the Stics off (again).

8. Indiana Fever (3–5)

Considering the issues with their personnel (only six players were available in all games), the Fever have had a solid season thus far. Kelsey Mitchell in particular has taken a big leap forward, veteran Candice Dupree and rookie point guard Julie Allemand have also been playing well. While their offense is already clicking (3rd in OffRtg), they still have to learn defending the hard way (12th in DefRtg).

9. Dallas Wings (3–5)

First and foremost, the young Wings have to come together as a team. The roles aren’t distributed yet, their starting five is ever changing. On offense, they try to value each possession – but the shots won’t fall for them. Above all, topscorer Arike Ogunbowale is struggling efficiency-wise. Furthermore, Dallas is the league’s worst-rebounding team.

10. Connecticut Sun (2–6)

After a forgettable start to the season (0–5), the Sun have found their groove. The excellent forward duo DeWanna Bonner / Alyssa Thomas finally gets more help from their teammates. Veteran point guard Jasmine Thomas and center Brionna Jones have been playing in convincing fashion in the last few games.

11. Atlanta Dream (2–6)

Ten new players in twelve roster spots, three of which were unavailable at the start of the season due to the corona virus – the Atlanta Dream still have to come together as a team. The weak defense and the error-prone offense underline that assumption. The injury to ROY candidate Chennedy Carter isn’t helping the Dream either.

12. New York Liberty (1–7)

Patience is key. Sabrina Ionescu’s injured, the six other rookies need time. While All-Star Kia Nurse is still looking for her shot, model vet Layshia Clarendon and stretch big Amanda Zahui B lead the way production-wise. As a team, the young Libs pull the trigger on the the most three-pointers; on top of that, their rebounding is pretty good.

WNBA Power Ranking #1 – Siro

1. Seattle Storm (7–1)

The Seattle Storm are without a doubt the team to beat. So far, it’s tough to imagine any team beating them in a five-game series. Breanna Stewart has been nothing short of sensational since her return to action, anchoring their smothering defense as well as their highly efficient offense – both rank first in the WNBA. While her backup Jordin Canada would probably start for most of the other teams, Sue Bird hasn’t forgotten how to orchestrate an offense either.

2. Las Vegas Aces (6–2)

Playing against Bill Laimbeer’s Aces is most certainly not a walk in the park. Las Vegas loves to take the ball inside, where A’ja Wilson continues to dominate. Angel McCoughtry is playing on a surprisingly high level, while last season’s Sixth Woman Dearica Hamby continues to shine off the bench. You’d almost forget they’re without Liz Cambage and Kelsey Plum… The Aces may not take a lot of threes, but they’re efficient from long range and on offense in general.

3. Minnesota Lynx (6–2)

Led by the legendary Sylvia Fowles, the Minnesota Lynx are back in the top tier of WNBA teams. They’re defending on an elite level, second only to the Seattle Storm. Lexie Brown has turned on her “theft mode” since her return from injury, while Fowles and Napheesa Collier protect the paint. Crystal Dangerfield has quickly earned her place in the starting five with her elusive speed and three-point shooting. And the pack only got stronger with the addition of Odyssey Sims to the #Wubble roster.

4. Los Angeles Sparks (5–3)

The season has been a rollercoaster ride for the Los Angeles Sparks thus far. They seem to have found their groove now: Candace Parker is playing some throwback basketball, while Sydney Wiese and Riquna Williams are splashing threes left and right at an absurd efficiency. The Sparks’ shooting makes them one of the hotter teams in the league right now. Expect them to climb the rankings if they can keep up that high-level offense.

5. Phoenix Mercury (5–3)

The Phoenix Mercury are back on track. After a slow start to the season, the big three Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner and new arrival Skylar Diggins-Smith are in full flow. Those three stars alone make Phoenix a contender. But on top of that, they have Bria Hartley as instant offense from the bench and talented role players, e. g. Sophie Cunningham and Alanna Smith. Phoenix will definitely (want to) compete for another title this season.

6. Chicago Sky (5–3)

The Chicago Sky are the league’s best shooting team, led by one of the best point guards in the history of the game, Courtney Vandersloot. Sharpshooter Allie Quigley has overcome her initial woes from downtown and has been on a shooting tear lately, their other shooters have at times been shaky, though. Injuries to key players have prevented them from performing better thus far. If they can get Stefanie Dolson, Diamond DeShields and Jantel Lavender 100% fit, they are a serious contender for the championship this season.

7. Connecticut Sun (2–6)

The trend is the Sun’s friend: After an abysmal start to the season, Connecticut seems to be back on track. It’s no longer DeWanna Bonner (and Alyssa Thomas) against the rest of the world. The supporting cast has stepped up and – most importantly – Briann January will return to action. The Sun will be chasing a playoff spot from here on out.

8. Washington Mystics (3–5)

The trend isn’t the Mystics’ friend: After a surprising 3–0 start with electrifying offensive prowess, Washington has fallen short five times in a row. The team needs to regroup and refocus to get back to winning ways. They’re still a lot better than every team behind them, so they should definitely reach the playoffs. Even though they’re missing almost an entire starting five, they still have “EM-V-P” Meesseman and an absolute genius of a head coach in Mike Thibault.

9. Indiana Fever (3–5)

The Indiana Fever are one of the more exciting teams to watch. While their offense ranks third in the WNBA, their defense has been catastrophic thus far. The absence of Erica Wheeler certainly contributes to the Fever’s problems, but the available players have to step up as well. The arrival of Lauren Cox will help Indiana on both ends of the court and make them less dependent from the shooting performances of the “splash sisters” Tiffany and Kelsey Mitchell.

10. Dallas Wings (3–5)

The Dallas Wings are kind of a weird team this season: They’re amongst the league leaders in offensive rebounding, but the worst team on their own glass. They’re one of they younger teams in the league, yet they’re playing at the second-lowest pace. Their biggest problem is their shooting, though: They’re hitting only 30% of their three-pointers, 76.6% from the line and overall 41.1% of their shots. All those are second-worst in the league. At times, when they were running, they’ve looked fantastic this season.

11. Atlanta Dream (2–6)

The newly assembled Atlanta Dream are going through some growing pains as well as missing a few key players from last season. On top, their star rookie Chennedy Carter will be sidelined for a few games with an ankle injury. The Dream will test their players this season to see what they can get out of them. Betnijah Laney has been a revelation thus far. She dramatically improved her offensive game and scoring output this season.

12. New York Liberty (1–7)

Phew – the New York Liberty… After losing Sabrina Ionescu to injury, the path for New York was even clearer. Player development should be at the forefront of their #Wubble experience, the other six rookies should see a lot of playing time. Jazmine Jones has been impressive thus far, Leaonna Odom and Kylee Shook looked promising as well. The veteran leadership from Amanda Zahui B, Kia Nurse and Layshia Clarendon should create an environment in which the talented youngsters can develop.

Puh, die New York Liberty…
